Phonics at Rockingham Junior and Infant

At Rockingham, we use a systematic programme of synthetic phonics called Letters & Sounds. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonics skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.

At Rockingham, we have a whole school approach to phonics. The Foundation and KS1 classes have daily phonics sessions during the week where all children are exposed to phonemes for reading and spelling. The daily lesson consists of a quick recap of previously taught phonemes, the teaching of a new phoneme, the children then have an opportunity to practise the new phoneme through interactive games and activities and finally to apply the new phoneme into reading or spelling. Children are regularly assessed in order to identify gaps in phonic knowledge which then leads into Phonics interventions for children who need a boost. Year 3 and 4 classes have Phonics delivered at least once a week, and booster phonics groups more often. The classes in Y5 and 6 work on spelling, including prefixes and suffixes, doubling and dropping letters etc. Success in phonics allows children to become more fluent in their reading.
